Gallery: the armoured diggers

I had to go on a pangolin hunt while I was researching their history. Given that everyone who encountered them seemed to have never heard of one before, and interpreted them in different ways, sifting out the ‘scaly lizards’; ‘quogelos’; ‘scaly devils’; ‘Taiwan devils’ and other such beasties from amongst myriad other indistinct naturalia was quite a task.

They are unmistakeable though, even as their slippery natures make them monstrous lizard-beasts to early modern naturalists.
